Alternate routes to bag work visa in Britain
There are quite a few attractive options on offer for foreign graduates who want to work in Britain.
Hindustan Times quotes the UK Home Office as saying that graduates who have a job offer with graduate-level salary can opt for Tier 2 visas and take up sponsored employment. There are more than 28,000 employers in the UK who are licensed Tier 2 sponsors. In case, graduates apply from within Britain, they get a waiver for the resident labour market test and are not subject to the yearly ceiling on the Tier 2 numbers.
Graduate entrepreneurs can apply through the Tier 1 route. Otherwise, they need to have been identified by a higher education institute/university or UK Trade and Investment, which lets them stay in the UK for a maximum of two years to promote their business there before they can switch to the Tier 1 (entrepreneur) or Tier 2 route.
Tier 5 route is available for graduates wanting to undergo professional training for a certain period or those wanting to undergo corporate internships relevant to their qualifications. This scheme allows non-EU graduates to gain work experience as they go through training schemes or paid internships. But they need to be paid equivalent to the minimum wage in the UK. Some British employers offering internship include BAE Systems, Bar Council and others.
On the other hand, PhD students are allowed to stay in the UK for one additional year after they complete their programme. This falls under the Tier 4 Doctorate Extension Scheme, which allows them to look out for employment or to float their own business. Eligible for the Tier 4 student visas are students who ought to have been admitted to study at an accredited educational institution, should have sufficient funds to sustain themselves while staying in the UK and should have the appropriate qualifications and proficiency in English to pursue their courses.
